Eyelash Implants (Eyelash Transplantation)

Eyelash implants or eyelash transplantation is a surgical, invasive procedure in which 20 – 60 hairs are implanted into the eyelid.  Hair follicles are harvested from a small area of the scalp, prepared and subsequently implanted (sewn) into the eyelid under local anesthesia.  The cost of eyelash implants typically ranges between $2500 and $3000 per eyelid.  Patients begin seeing results after 3-6 months. 

Because the hair is taken from your own head, it continues growing.  As a result, the transplanted scalp hair must be trimmed and curled every 6 weeks.  The surgery leaves small, permanent scarring at the eyelash implant location. 

Ocuplastic surgeons only recommend eyelash transplantation or eyelash implants for those who have suffered from permanent lash loss, severe burns or scarring of the eyelids.  Due to serious complications that can result from the transplantation, Ocuplastic surgeons advise patients not to have the procedure done for cosmetic purposes.  Serious complications that may occur as a result of eyelash transplantation or eyelash implants:

• Madarosis – Permanent loss of eyelashes
  
• Trichiasis – Ingrown eyelashes and growth misdirection of the lashes
  
• Blepharitis – Irritation of the lid margin where eyelashes join the eyelid
  
• Infestations – Parasites which can attack eyelashes
  
• Styes and Chalazions – Small tumors of the eyelid
