Eyelash Extensions Should Be Seen – Not Felt

I tweet (a lot) and every week on Twitter I see several posts from women saying they hate their eyelash extensions because they hurt.

Here’s an important fact, if you’re saying “My eyelash extensions hurt”, you should return to the salon or stylist who worked on you because this is not a normal response.

Eyelash Extensions Stuck Together

Eyelash extensions, when applied properly, should be seen but never felt. A painful lash application usually indicates one or more of your natural lashes is stuck together. Sometimes it’s just a small pinching sensation in one particular area of the lash line. This is a quick fix as it typically indicates only two little lashes stuck together but it can hurt (feels like being pinpricked with a needle on your lid) and should be fixed as soon as you can swing by the salon.

The pain is the result of the two natural lashes growing at different speeds and the faster growing lash is stuck to a slower growing lash and tugging it along. It will take less than 5 minutes to unstick the two lashes but it’s a job best left to the pros. Trained stylists should be checking the entire application to ensure no lashes are stuck together throughout the procedure and the really good ones do!

Now, there could be a bigger problem if you’re lashes look something like those shown on the right.

This application is very poor; the person who applied these lashes did not isolate the natural lashes so they are all stuck together. This type of application would hurt A LOT! If you’re lashes look like this, I recommend going to a different professional for a complete removal ASAP. With all of the lashes stuck together and growing at different rates, a poor application like this can damage your natural lashes. You want to avoid going back to the same place if you can because someone who applies lashes like this is obviously untrained and not concerned with the health and safety of your lashes. Who knows what they would use to try and remove them!

Here is a close-up of what a proper application of eyelash extensions should look like:

Properly applied eyelash extensions

Notice how you can clearly see each individual lash from the base to the tip. There shouldn’t be any excess amounts of adhesive visible and each lash should be defined. This is what makes eyelash extensions the gold standard of lash enhancement – they look just like your lashes, even up close!

Always remember – the application of eyelash extensions is a highly skilled craft and should only be attempted by trained professionals. Always ask to see proof of training before you let anyone work on your eyes! It’s always great to ask to view pictures of their personal work to ensure you know what you will be getting.
