One of the great blessings of being a mother is to be able to pass down your wisdom and experience to your children in ways that will help them to grow into beautiful, wonderful adults. I know that my own words and actions have impacted the individual journeys of all my children, so it makes me very proud to see them develop into the productive, successful adults they are today.

Through my experiences in the beauty industry, and even as a pediatric ICU nurse, I’ve learned a thing or two about how beauty is perceived and what true beauty really means – and over the years, I’ve shared that beauty advice with my own daughters. With Mother’s Day approaching, I’d like to do the same with all of you and your daughters. I also encourage each of you to add your own beauty advice for the younger women in the comments below so that we can all learn from each other and impart our collective wisdom to the women of tomorrow.

Shopping for NEW Eyeglasses or Sunglasses:

Shop locally and always try on to get the best fit! Look for glasses with rounded, curved shapes. Flat glasses will sit closer into your face while rounded ones allow more space between your lashes and the lenses. It may take numerous attempts to find the perfect shape to keep your lashes free and clear but with a little persistence, you’ll get the payoff with the perfect pair.

For Existing Eyeglasses and Sunglasses:

If you already have your eyeglasses or sunglasses and your lashes are hitting them, an Optician may be able to help you get free and clear. Glasses generally don’t sit straight up and down. They’re tilted (it’s called the pantoscopic tilt) so that the bottom of the frame is closer to the face and the top is a bit farther away. This tilt can be adjusted in many cases. Visit your local optical office and see if your glasses can be fitted to better accommodate your lashes by moving the top a bit further away from your face and the bottom closer in.

Customizing Your Lashes for Lenses:

If you can’t adjust your lenses, try adjusting your lashes! Ask your lash stylist about changing to a more dramatic curl. Curvier lashes sweep up, more than out, and are more likely to miss your lenses and be a hit with you!

A native of Rio de Janeiro Brazil, Leonora moved to the United States when she was 21. After graduating from college in Texas with a nursing degree, she went to work in the beauty industry as a Medical Esthetician performing dermatological procedures such as the application of botulinum toxin treatments (Botox), dermal fillers, laser hair removal, and skin rejuvenation. While she loved her chosen field, the hours and time away from home weren’t always ideal. After having her two children, Leonora really wanted to have more flexibility for their schedules and be able to spend more time at home.

“I saw something on TV about eyelash extensions and thought it was really interesting,” Leonora says. “I went to a local salon to try it for myself and they really did a horrible job. I’m not sure they had any training at all, looking back, and I thought, I could do this and do it better.” She searched online for training companies and found Xtreme Lashes. “I really like the company; the products seemed high quality and the service was excellent.”

Leonora signed up for training with Xtreme Lashes in December of 2008. She went to work on friends and family members immediately and rave reviews began pouring in. Within four months of her training, her new service was booming and Leonora quit her salon job to devote herself full time to lashes.

Butterfly Kisses Lashes is now Leonora’s sole business venture and she sees clients out of the comfort of her own home in Katy, TX. She works Monday through Friday, nine hours a day, and occasional Saturdays by special request. “I’m amazed at how busy I am, all the time,” she says, “and I love what I do. It’s so relaxing to me, plus it gives me the opportunity to work from home and raise my kids at the same time.”

As a Registered Nurse, Leonora takes pride in her work and in giving each client customized services. “I spend at least twenty minutes meeting with new clients. I look at their facial features, their lashes and the shape of their eyes and try to see what is going to bring out their features the best,” she says. She is constantly seeking educational opportunities to enrich her curriculum as a Certified Aesthetic Nurse and Certified Lash Stylist, including two additional courses with Xtreme Lashes to update her skills in the Advanced Training Program.

Now that she’s been applying eyelash extensions for over three years and her kids are older, Leonora is thinking about the future and has plans for expansion. “I’d like open my own lash specialty salon, and hire additional stylists to work with me. There’s definitely a market for it. My hope is to do this possibly by the end of the year or the beginning of next year.”

Her clients will, no doubt, follow wherever Leonora decides to take Butterfly Kisses Lashes in the future. The words they share express an obvious love for both her personal nature and her transformative abilities:

5. Custom Looks: You can’t create a cat eyed look, vary the curl of different lashes to add lift or choose exactly how long you want your lashes to be with mascara. Your Lash Stylist can do all this and more with eyelash extensions!

No Panda Peepers: Eyelash extensions won’t run, bleed, drip, etc., etc. You will be safe to swim, shower, cry, perspire (or “glow” if you like) and not leave any telltale signs that your lashes have been “enhanced” from those that Mother Nature blessed you with. Born and raised in Yokohama, Japan, Emily moved to the United States in 1999 to attend college at Fresno State in Fresno, California. “I couldn’t see making a real living painting or drawing but I had to do something artistic so I chose to pursue Graphic Design,” she says. She was good at design and obtained her degree, yet found she wasn’t passionate about it. Looking into other career options, she turned to the health and beauty industry and became certified for massage therapy, but found it still wasn’t quite the right fit.

In 2007, Emily enrolled in esthetics school and learned about a relatively new service called eyelash extensions. Intrigued by the intricate, creative application concepts, she set out to find out all she could and decide if this could be the right direction for her. “I thoroughly research everything before I do it and this was no exception. I finally chose Xtreme Lashes because I wanted to learn from the best. I felt like this company was so advanced with their research and explanations, and the reviews I found were amazing. The service was still new but it just seemed to me like Xtreme Lashes knew what they were doing.”

Emily signed on for her initial training with Xtreme Lashes in April 2008 and fell in love. She spent the next year and a half applying lashes inside a local spa, before making the momentous decision to strike out on her own. She set up a cozy little area in her home and began building her private clientele entirely through referrals. “I would apply lashes to my friends and they would tell others and it just spread – fast,” she says. “Pretty soon it was crazy and I decided I needed to get an outside space and not have so many strangers knowing where I live,” she laughs.

Never one to jump in without her research, Emily decided to fortify her application skills and her marketing presence before expanding her business by returning to Xtreme Lashes for a Directory Training in early January of 2012. Just days later, EM-azing Lashes opened in a small office space in Fresno. “It’s been unbelievable,” she says. “I started retailing and the products are selling like crazy. I’m not a sales person but they are selling themselves! I try to squeeze in everyone for appointments because I like to please people but I’m already at a point where I need help,” she exclaims. EM-azing Lashes is booked almost solid every open hour, six days a week, from 10am until 7pm.

Emily is already thinking expansion, with plans to open a small lash studio in a bigger space. After she does her research and takes a few courses in management and business, of course.

“I love, love, LOVE doing this,” Emily says. “I want people to ‘know’ me for this. I’m so very passionate about it. It’s all I do and I’m making a pretty good living out of doing it. It’s rewarding and every day I feel like am I doing the right thing for me.”

Apparently she is also doing the right thing for her clients, and they love to admit it:

“Em did my lashes for my wedding and they were absolutely amazing. I got compliments from my makeup lady (who did lashes herself) and she said these are some of the best she’s seen. Plus, Em is a sweetheart so the time it takes to put the lashes on seems to fly by.”
