NEWS SPOTLIGHT: Texas Lash Addicts Want Safe and Beautiful Lashes!

Houston’s KTRK-Channel 13 recently aired a news story on Xtreme Lashes, its flagship Studio, and the latest eyelash extension regulations in Texas.

As many of you know, Xtreme Lashes has been the global leader in eyelash extensions due to its diligent attention to safety, sanitation, hygiene, and extensive training.

Xtreme Lashes Founder, President & CEO Jo Mousselli, RN, has been instrumental in leading by example – so much, in fact, that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR) sought her expertise when they decided to recognize the application of eyelash extensions and lash styling as a self-standing profession.

Jo advises consumers to look for the following when seeking a professional Lash Stylist:

  1. Sanitary Environment
    • “Sanitation and disinfection is extremely important to prevent infections.  Infections are primarily caused by infectious microorganisms, bacteria, and viruses,” Jo explains. “Every lash application must start with a thorough cleansing of the lashes and the entire eye area.”
  2. Disposable Application Tools
    • All supplies used at Xtreme Lashes are disposable – except the tweezers, which are disinfected with Barbicide between every lash application.
    • Jo teaches Xtreme Lashes Lash Stylists, “Never use the same implements on more than one client.”
    • She advises consumers, “Ensure that your Lash Stylist uses sanitary and disposable, single-use application supplies.”

  4. Pre-Consultation Analysis
    • Your Lash Stylist will need to assess a client’s social and physical needs, as well as her desires and the products she uses, before starting a lash application.
    • Jo requires that “a thorough, physical examination of the eye area is essential  prior to starting a lash application.”
    • For Lash Stylists, she suggests, “Refuse to apply lashes on any client with signs and symptoms of an eye infection.” This is for the safety of the client as well as the Lash Stylist.

Jo believes in being prudent and assessing the environment –

“Is your Lash Stylist using sanitary and disposable supplies. Have they washed their hands prior to applying your lashes? Do they perform a pre-application consultation and a physical assessment of your eyes prior to your lash application? Do they ask you if you are having any symptoms of infection and irritation?”

    Big, Bold Lashes – The Hottest Trend In Grammy Beauty

    The 2012 Grammy Awards were flooded with fluttering, flirtatiously long lashes. From Adele to Carrie Underwood, Grammy night’s biggest stars took lashes new lengths on the red carpet this year. While falsies were certainly spotted on several songstresses, the best looking lashes were those that were big and bold but still begged the question, “did she or didn’t she go faux?”

    The Official Glam Squad for this year’s Grammy Awards headed to Xtreme Lashes Stylist Heidi Evora-Santiago at New York’s Damali NYC to see why eyelash extensions are “the go-to glam accessory for red-carpet moments” and for a fun, flirtatious look without a fake appearance.

    Big, bold lashes shouldn’t have to look fake. If you have healthy natural lashes, eyelash extensions can definitely give you the dramatic diva lashes you’re after and still keep it real (looking, at least)!

    For the most volumizing impact on your eyes, ask your stylist about using some curvier lashes in your design, be sure to opt for the fullest set of lashes (85 lashes or more per eye) and think volume, not length. Choosing to too long can actually make your lashes appear to have less volume (like Tajari Henson’s Grammy lashes), while staying a bit closer to your natural lash length (like Taylor Swift did) will give you a much fuller appearance.

    P.S. To really accentuate your dramatically lashed eyes, follow Adele’s example and taper a thick, dark line of eyeliner along your lash line, too.

      Jason Hill – Featured Lash Stylist, February 2012

      The application of eyelash extensions is an exacting and technical skill. And, while the vast majority of Xtreme Lashes Stylists have come from creative, beauty related backgrounds, sometimes a technical background brings us a top-notch lash pro. San Diego, CA resident Jason Hill is just such a person.

      After graduating from the University of Washington with a Bachelor’s of Science in Neurobiology, Jason worked for several years in neuroscientific research and microsurgery. The precision and technique developed during this time serve as the springboard for Jason’s success in the exacting work of custom eye enhancements.

      Jason was introduced to eyelash extensions after a serendipitous meeting with Xtreme Lashes Trainer Ignacia Garcia. The two met on vacation in Buenos Aires and forged an instant friendship. When they returned to the states, the friendship continued and Jason set out to help Ignacia with her plans to open her own business in Chicago – the now highly successful Flutter Lash Studio.

      As he learned more about Ignacia’s business, the technical aspect of eyelash extensions drew Jason in. “I had taken a leave of absence and was looking to change careers to something with more person to person contact,” says Jason. “I felt there was something missing in my life,” says Jason. “It was the ability to express myself artistically and connect with others on a personal level instead of being isolated in a lab.”

      Jason jumped into lashes with both feet, taking his initial training class in Chicago, with Ignacia as his instructor, in March of 2008. He opened his own San Diego studio, Tranquility Lashes, just weeks after his first training class, then followed up with a Certification class three months later, qualifying for the Directory at the same time. Three months after that, he returned for an Advanced Training class. And the rest, as they say, is history!

      “I love the precision of the work. I love to create artistic designs and shapes but the technical aspect – getting the lash straight and perfectly attached – is what keeps me interested. Doing eyelashes has totally calmed me as a person,” Jason says. He passes this calming influence on to his clients with soothing mantra music, a tranquil environment and aromatherapy sessions to create a perfectly relaxed setting for their eyelash experience.

      Being a Lash Stylist at Tranquility Lashes is Jason’s chosen career now, for both the intrinsic love he has of the service and for the rewards he has received in return. “I work five days week, anywhere from thirty to forty-five hours, and this has been my full income for the past three years. I make much more than I made in the pharmaceutical industry and retail has been about 15% of my business! I have some people that aren’t lash clients but will come in just for GlideLiner.”

      The combination of Jason’s scientific skill, business sense, artistic passion and love for serving others ensures his clients are thrilled with their new extensions and with him. His success speaks volumes to the devotion for his art of enhancing the unique beauty of the eye.

        What To Do If You Receive A Bad Eyelash Extension Application

        Of course, we wish that everyone chose an Xtreme Lashes Stylist for their eyelash extensions but we always hate to hear of anyone receiving a bad eyelash extension application, no matter who they choose. The image above was shared with us by Xtreme Lashes Poland and is of a woman who came to see them after having a very poor quality lash application from an unqualified person, NOT an Xtreme Lashes Stylist.

        We always stress that training is immensely important when choosing a stylist for your lashes and we strongly suggest that you always ask to see proof of training before allowing anyone to work on you. Not everyone receives this advice in time, though. If you have an unfortunate experience with eyelash extensions (or cluster lashes) applied by an unqualified person, here are a few things you should (and shouldn’t) do:

        • First and foremost, do NOT attempt to remove the extensions yourself. Professional quality lash adhesives are strong-bonding (if that is even what was used) and designed to hold tight. Attempts to remove any extensions yourself will often result in the removal of many of your own lashes as well.
        • Find a professionally trained lash stylist for removal. We don’t advise returning to a location that performed a poor quality application for removal. If care was not taken during an application, it is highly questionable that it would be taken during removal.
        • Consult with the professional lash stylist about the condition of your lashes. If your natural lashes are damaged after the extension removal due to excessive adhesive use, you may need to apply a lash conditioner for several weeks in order to strengthen and fortify your weakened lashes.
        • You can have new eyelash extensions applied correctly, but only when your professional lash stylist advises it is okay to do so. You may need to wait for a period of time if your lashes were damaged to allow them to strengthen and regrow.

        Remember that properly applied eyelash extensions should never look like those pictured above. Eyelash extensions should never be painful and they should look like your own lashes, just longer and thicker. You should always be able to completely separate each of your extended lashes and not have large sections adhered together.

              Trend Talk: How To Get Show-Stopping Statement Brows

              High fashion runways were filled with models sporting show-stopping statement brows at many of the shows for spring 2012’s collections.

              While runway beauty is often a bit over-the-top for your every day look, this trend can be scaled back to achieve the same idea, without the excess. To channel your inner Brook Shields:

              • CONDITION: Start using an eyebrow conditioner now if you have thin, over-plucked or sparse brows.                 Angi Wolfe – Featured Lash Stylist, January 2012

                Over the past 25 years, Angi Wolfe has made the beauty industry her profession. But, Angi has made staying on the cutting edge of this industry her passion! She has set her goals high to keep up with the newest trends, concepts and innovations of the beauty industry. Today, she continues to exceed those goals by coupling Xtreme Lashes, the hottest lash extension brand on the market, with the opening of her brand new spa and lash studio in Springboro, Ohio.

                Angi joined the Xtreme Lashes family in October of 2007, taking her initial training class in Detroit, MI. At the time she was an employee, fostering hopes of one day becoming an employer and salon owner herself. Adding eyelash extension services to her skills set was a huge stepping stone to getting her started on that road to ownership. “My clients’ have been addicted to this service from the beginning,” she says. “Lash extensions have been the single best add-on service I offer to my skincare clients.”

                While employed as the Spa Director for one of the biggest free-standing salons in the Midwest, with nearly 100 employees in one location, Angi had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented and renowned Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists in the world. Learning from the best, and directing a salon of that size, helped her develop ideas to incorporate the power of a large salon into the comfort and personalization of the smaller atmosphere.

                In August of 2010, Angi returned to Xtreme Lashes to fine tune her skills and achieved the level of Certified Xtreme Lashes Stylist. By the following spring, she was ready to branch out on her own.

                In June, 2011 Angi opened Enhance Spa & Lash Studio, one of Ohio’s first dedicated lash studios.
