As a professional lash stylist, your client’s safety should be the number one priority at your salon or spa. In addition to following the safety procedures outlined in your eyelash extensions training for proper lash application techniques and any local regulations, here are five safety measures you can use during your lash application services to ensure you provide the safest care possible for your clients.
- Conduct a Patch Test
When appropriate, you may elect to apply one pass of lashes (about 10 extensions per eye) using the same length and diameter as the client’s natural lashes. Ten lashes per eye allows you to gain meaningful insight without affecting the client’s looks. You don’t want them to leave the consultation with anything noticeable during the test.
Follow up with your client 24 and 48 hours later. If the client isn’t experiencing any adverse reactions and you both agree, you can proceed with a full application using the adhesive you tested with.
If in doubt, DO NOT proceed with the application and refer your client to their medical provider.
Remember to start every application with a pre-application consultation and a signed Waiver & Release Form to obtain informed consent.
Caution: Do not perform a patch test on a client’s skin when assessing for adverse reactions to lash extension adhesives because any irritants that may occur from them are typically from the fumes interacting with moisture produced by the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and/or mouth.
- Maintain a Clean Workspace
Maintaining a clean workspace is one of the most critical safety measures you can take as a pro lash stylist. This means ensuring your tools, equipment, and workspace are cleaned and sanitized before and after each client. Using clean towels, brushes, tweezers, and other equipment protects your clients from cross-contamination during lash applications.
- Keep Proper Documentation and Conduct Consultations
Before you apply your client’s eyelash extensions, you should ensure you’ve examined their lashes and checked their eye health by using a comprehensive recordkeeping system. Always consult with your clients beforehand about their medical history, allergies, medications, and even the cosmetic or treatment products they use as all of these could affect the efficacy of adhesive bonds and the client experience. Then, evaluate their natural lashes to ensure they can manage lash extensions. End each application with an aftercare demonstration and review all aftercare products necessary to maintain the integrity of the lashes and the client’s natural lash health.
- Invest in Safe, High-Quality Lash Extension Supply Products
Investing in high-quality adhesives, lashes, and other materials that meet or exceed safety standards is a critical step in ensuring you’re providing safe lash applications to your clients. Using high-quality products during lash application reduces the risk of allergic reactions and eye infections from improperly sanitized tools or contaminated adhesives.
To ensure you’re buying the safest, highest-quality lash extension supply products on the market, you can review product labels, research brands that prioritize the safety of their products, and get recommendations from other pro lash stylists you trust.
- Educate and Support Your Clients Before, During, and After
It’s important to prioritize your client’s experience and ensure they have accurate information about the service they receive before, during, and after their lash application. Address any concerns they may have during their application and always be sure to provide accurate aftercare instructions.
Aftercare is a crucial safety measure in lash application because it helps avoid infections, irritation, and allergic reactions. Your clients should avoid oil-based products around their eyes and refrain from rubbing or pulling their extensions. During this time, you can also recommend aftercare products to help promote the hygiene and longevity of your client’s lashes and recommend safe cosmetic and eye area treatment products for them to use with their lash extensions.
